The Winona Winstar's Fall Ball team played in the State Qualifying tournament this last Sunday in Shakopee. The Winstar's finished as one of the top teams and earned a berth in the State Tournament to be held in Elk River. The Winstar's had to decline the offer to play in the State Tourney as it takes place on Homecoming weekend.
In game one the Winstar's went up against Armstrong-Cooper. The Winona ladies scored to quick runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as they won the game 5-4. Samantha Grossell tossed a 3-hitter, picking up the win. Katie Florin drove in two with her 2 base hits, one of which was a double. Amber Huntley also had 2 hits and 1 rbi. Samantha Papenfus scored 2 runs and stole 3 bases to help the team win. Game two saw the Winstar's play the hometown team the Shakopee Sabers. The Winstar's didn't play their normal game and for the first time this fall they lost 8-0. Karissa Jensen took the loss, but the team didn't make very many plays behind her. Jocelyn Fratzke had the only hit for the Winstar's. Game 3 was a must win game in order to qualify and the weather, which was miserable for the first two games was now far worse. The Winstar's squared off against Eden Prairie.
In the 2nd inning the Winstar's erupted for 4 runs on 5 hits and then just continued to score 1 or 2 the runs every inning. Sammy Grossell's picked up her 2nd win of the day as the Winstar's won 11-3. Amber Huntley led the way going 3-4 with 2 rbi's. Jocelyn Fratzke went 3-3. Sammy Grossell helped her own cause out with 2 rbi base hits in the game. Leah Hanson and Rose Bublitz both had a pair of hits in the game as well. The Winstar's ended up their Fall Ball season with a record of 7 wins 1 loss and 1 tie.
