Tootsie Roll project funds help the mentally handicapped (04/25/2012)
Yes, itís Tootsie Roll time again!Ö Yes, over twenty thousand Tootsie Rolls will be distributed again this year. This is how many Tootsie Rolls will be passed out at churches and various businesses throughout the Winona area by the Knights of Columbus (Council #639), April 27th Ė 29th. Donations will be accepted to help the mentally handicapped developmentally disabled who reside in the local area.

This year marks the 26h annual fundraiser for that cause, taken up by the Knights.

Over 100 Knights and their family members will volunteer for 2-3 hour shifts to make this a successful event. They are easily recognizable by their brightly colored yellow vests.

The monies collected from the Tootsie Roll Drive are distributed to organizations that serve the mentally handicapped in the Winona County area. Donations received (less the cost of the Tootsie Rolls), are distributed to: Winona County DAC and ARC, Home & Community Options of Winona, Hiawatha Valley Mental Health Center, C.O.M.P.A.S.S., Catholic Charities/Winona MR Program, and the Minnesota Special Olympics #10. The KofC is the sole sponsor of the MN Special Olympics Fall Classic.

Fr. Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882. The KofC is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world with over 1.6 million members. Last year they donated nearly $110 million to charity and volunteered more than 55 million hours of service.

The Tootsie Roll campaign is just one of many charitable activities promoted by the KCs. Through other donations they support a variety of church projects, youth activities such as Scouting, and community programs that help the poor, disaster victims, pro-life efforts and civic projects. They also support programs for schools, parish religious education of seminarians.
