Four area high school students have been selected as recipients of the Project FINE College Education Connection Essay Contest Scholarships. These four recipients, Pahoua Xiong, Yia Hang and Meng Xiong of Winona and Jessica Salas of St. Charles, showcased hard work and determination throughout their high school careers as part of Project FINE’s College Education Connection Program.
To be selected for the scholarships, the students wrote essays about why they are passionate about furthering their education after high school, and about the educational experiences they have had thus far both in school and in life as children of newcomers to America. These four students carry unique perspectives about the power of education and recognize the boundless possibilities that education can offer them.
Project FINE is pleased to offer one of the scholarships in the name of Gail Bradbury, a long time supporter of Project FINE, Board member and Treasurer who passed on in early May. Gail’s leadership in welcoming immigrants and refugees to our community, and her strong belief in the power of education, will not be forgotten. The winners of the Project FINE scholarships and the Gail Bradbury Memorial Scholarship will be recognized at Project FINE’s seventh annual “Taste of International Cuisine” fundraising event that will occur on June 10 at Visions Event Center.
The Project FINE College Education Connection Scholarships were funded by the generous support of the Project FINE Board of Directors as well as special support from Dr. Connie Gores who danced for Project FINE’s scholarship fund at Dancing With Winona Stars 2011.
