The Winona County History Center has many activities and programs planned for June. They include: Chocolate Shakespeare and Champagne on June 9 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Huff - Lamberton House. Tickets for this fun summer fundraiser and Great River Shakespeare Festival kick off are available at the Winona County History Center or at the event. They are $20 for WCHS members and $25 for non-members.
The WCHS Food For Thought Lunchtime Learning Series welcomes Judge Dennis Challeen on June 6 at 12:05 p.m. for “How Lincoln and a Confederate Judge Left Winona a Historical Treasure”. On June 13 Joe Lepley and some student ambassadors will discuss the treasured relationship with Winona’s sister city, Misato, Japan at 12:05 p.m. and The Book Chat will discuss “The Zookeeper’s Wife” by Margaret Dilloway on June 27.
On June 14 the History Center will host Fluteistry, a flute group that will perform in the lobby at 12:15 p.m. and at 7 p.m. Lt. Andrew Peterson will give an evening program about the “100 Years of Naval Aviation”.
Exhibits will also be changing at the History Center. Don’t miss the American Library Association exhibit, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” which will move on June 8. Replacing it will be a new exhibit by WCHS, “History a Go - Go: Winona in the 1960s, with a member reception June 11 from 5 - 7 p.m. It will be up June 11 through October 7 and will explore how Winona changes through the 1960s, from fires to floods, to four laves, it was a fast paced decade!
WCHS is also teaming up with the Winona Public Library to host the Library’s Children’s Performance Series. The following programs will be at the History Center on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.: June 13 - Magic w/ Bob Kann, June 20 - Rad Zoo (live animals), June 27 - Bats w/ Ranger Ed, July 11 - Music w/ Hans Mayer, July 18 - Stories w/Ranger Ed, July 27 - Mad Science of Iowa
WCHS historic sites are now open for the summer! The Bunnell House in Homer, MN is open Wednesday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 - 5 p.m. The Arches Museum of Pioneer Life along Hwy 14 between Stockton and Lewiston is open Wednesday through Sunday 1 - 5 p.m.
