Cotter students, teachers visit Germany (07/25/2012)
For two and a half weeks in June, Cotter German students, Hannah Sillman, David Schwend, Xavier and Dmitri Waters visited the city of Koeln (Cologne) accompanied by their German instructor Ulrike Schorn-Hoffert and English teacher Cindy Scudiero. Koeln was founded in 50 AD by the Romans and is now Germany’s fourth largest city with a rich cultural heritage. The group was welcome by gracious host families and attended some of the classes at the Liebfrauenschule ( school of our beloved Lady), a private Catholic high school. Among the many excursions were visits to a medieval castle towering over the Rhine river, a late 18th century castle, the famous Gothic Cologne cathedral, the city of Aachen where Charlemagne was crowned and a coal mining museum which included a guided tour underground. Students also got a first hand taste of Germany’s enthusiasm for soccer by following the games of the European soccer championship. Hopefully students from the Cologne school will be able to visit Cotter next year to continue this exchange experience. Ms. Schorn-Hoffert initiated and organized the program in 2005 together with the Cotter International Admissions office and her German teaching colleagues in Cologne to provide an authentic cultural immersion experience for the participants.
