Walter “Bill” W. Brown, age 83, of Winona, died Monday, July 23, 2012, at Winona Health, Winona, Minn.
Walter “Bill” William was born April 12, 1929, in Winona, to Ned Sr. and Florence (Davies) Brown. He was a graduate of Winona Senior High School and also attended Winona State University. He was a lifelong area resident and on January 4, 1950, he married Kathryn Mlynczak at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, Winona. Kathryn preceded him in death on March 21, 1975. This union was blessed with four children: twins Michael and Patrick and daughters Mary and Barbara. Bill honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, 11th Airborne from June 1948 to July 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He was employed for 32 years at St. Mary’s Press and he established Brown’s Creative Picture Framing in 1974.
Those left to cherish his memory include sons: Michael (Peggy) Brown, Andover, Minn., and Patrick (Joan) Brown, Maplewood, Minn.; a daughter, Mary (James) Backus, Woodbury, Minn., nine grandchildren: Jaclyn (Patrick) Popehn, Scott Brown, Jeffrey Brown, Craig Brown, Michelle (Steve) Grose, Matthew Brown, Barbara Backus, and twins Deklan and Madilyn Hoff; great- grandchildren: Dylan and Parker Popehn; a brother, Ned Jr. “Chuck” (Betty) Brown, Winona; a sister, Donna Ties, Lewiston, Minn., a special friend, Linda Schwartz, Winona, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathryn Brown; daughter, Barbara Hoff and sister, Shirley Brown.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with Rev. Richard Colletti officiating. Military burial honors will be conducted by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9, Winona, at church following the Mass. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with parish vigil prayers at 6:45 p.m. Visitation will begin at noon at the church on Saturday.
Casket bearers will be Scott Brown, Jeffrey Brown, Craig Brown, Matthew Brown, Patrick Popehn, and Steve Grose.
The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Parker and the Winona Health staff for their care and compassion given to Bill and our family during the time of his illness.
