I personally want to commend the Buffalo County Zoning Board of Adjustment for voting to unanimously deny two permit requests for an industrial frac sand drying plant and rail spur near Cochrane-Fountain City School on July 24. Your thoughtful and wise decision is seen by many county residents as a sincere attempt to respond to the interests of many in our community (most notably, students who attend the school). By doing the right thing, you have shown that profits by a few are not worth compromising the health and safety of our kids.
There are also many groups and individuals to thank - particularly the 70 people who testified at the public hearing, the CFC School Board, the Buffalo County Defenders and the citizen action group (made up of homeowners and parents). The yellow signs and banners throughout the area did not go unnoticed.
This small victory has reaffirmed for many of us why we live in this beautiful and rare “driftless area.” We must continue the challenge to preserve what is worth more than dollars.
I feel a collective sense of pride in what we have accomplished, and urge everyone to stay involved as we move forward.
