Robert J. “Bob” Kunst, age 82, of rural Winona (Hart Township), died on July 31, 2012, at the Lewiston Villa, with his family by his side.
He was born on June 9, 1930, in Caledonia, Minn., to William and Cecelia (Schauls) Kunst. He graduated from Rushford High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.
Bob married Ardell Hackbarth on January 17, 1959. He took over the family farm fifty-five years ago and was actively farming until his retirement in 2009; he remained on the farm until March of 2012 at which time he entered the Lewiston Villa.
He was on the board of directors at the Farmers Elevator in Rushford for 21 years, with many of those years serving as president, an honor he took very seriously and was very proud of.
Bob’s passion in life was the farm he worked and the family he and his wife raised. Bob also loved traveling with Ardell, meeting new people and visiting with family.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ardell; three sons, Dan (Kim) Kunst, Rushford; Steve Kunst, Winona; Tom (Sandi) Kunst; Rancho Cucamonga, Cal; daughter, MariEllen (Ray) Papenfuss, Elba, Minn; six grandchildren, Tiffany (Ross) Nelson, Adam (Katy) Kunst, Tara (Jon Miller) Kunst, Desiree (Kenneth Gray) Goetting, Shauna (Brandon) Haas and Tylor (Heather Bartsh) Papenfuss; six great grandchildren, Caleb, Mariah and Leah Nelson; Brennan and Parker Kunst and Elena Bostrom; two sisters, Rita Mae Peterson, Lewiston; and Winnie Philipps, Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, LeRoy Kunst.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 6, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Wilson, with Father Timothy J. Hall officiating. Burial with Military Rites provided by the Jackson-O’Meara American Legion Post 90 of Lewiston will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday, August 5, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. and also on Monday at the church after 10 a.m.
Casketbearers will be Adam Kunst, Tylor Papenfuss, Ross Nelson, Glenn Warnken, Bernie Philipps and Jim Peterson. Honorary casketbearers will be Bob’s granddaughters.
Funeral arrangements were completed by Martin-Myhre Funeral Home.
