God, Satan, and the media (08/12/2012)
From: Mary Zimmerman

Winona

Take a look around the world: wars, murders, abortion, to name a few, just running rampant. Or just take a glance around our own city and see that Satan is alive and well, working strategically in so many lives. It all boils down to a war between God and evil and it saddens me deeply to see so many of our young people caught up in the midst of it all. That’s why it’s so important to arm your children with spiritual weapons to fight the evils of the world.

One of Satan’s favored ways to attack mankind is through the media. He prides himself in getting articles splashed on the front pages and editorials of a daily newspaper with half truths about priests and the Catholic Church. It would better serve people to read something positive like the recent Jason Kerns ordination to the priesthood or Pope Benedict’s recent trip to Mexico and Cuba. I grieve deeply over the priest scandal. But don’t put them all in the same basket. We have many holy priests. Don’t reject the Catholic Church because a small percent went astray.

I can’t help but wonder what effect the R rated movies are having. It would seem very serious according to police reports.

Certainly TV, the Internet, and videos add to this sad dilemma. Pornographic magazines and books, and of course Satan camouflages himself in excess alcohol or food, drugs, etc. We need to uncover these traps and snares he sets for our children or all of us. God is on our side ready to shower graces and blessings upon the media that provide good and wholesome entertainment. Some movies, the TV, books, etc., we need to seek these out and tell people about them. I am watching for the movie “October Baby” to be shown at the Winona theater, a story about a saline abortion survivor who was adopted out and then goes on in search of her birth mother - and finds her. There are some good programs on TV as well, a Catholic network that is on 24 hours a day. There’s excellent reading concerning Mattie Stepanek. He died at the age of 14, the longest survivor of a crippling disease that took the lives of his 3 siblings. He and Jimmy Carter wrote a book, “Just Peace.”

Mattie was a poet, peacemaker and philosopher. His heartsongs are sure to touch your heart.

“The Other Side” by Michael Brown has been a great comfort to those losing loved ones. “Struck by Lightning,” is about a woman in Colombia who was struck by lightning twice, prompting a review of her life before the throne of God.

We are part of the media as well to evangelize and spread the gospel around the world. We are to be the hands, feet and heart of Jesus, closing the traps Satan has set. As Christians we have the obligation to use the media, including the Holy Bible, for our good and the good of the world.
