The sound of whistles once again filled the air inside Verizon Wireless Stadium as the Winona State football team opened its fall camp Saturday afternoon.
On a comparatively cool August afternoon the Warriors began preparations for an opening game that is less than three weeks away.
“It’s awesome being back on the field,” WSU head coach Tom Sawyer said. “We have been looking forward to this day since we walked off the field after our last game at Wayne State last season. The guys are ready to go.”
Winona State returns plenty of talent from a team that went 7-4 last season despite a rash of injuries at key positions. Running back Rayon Simmons leads the charge after earning NSIC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year accolades for the second consecutive season. Simmons ran for over 1,300 yards as a junior last year and enters 2012 needing fewer than 400 yards to become WSU’s all-time leading rusher.
In all, eight players who earned all-NSIC honors return for the Warriors.
“The team really is optimistic and confident,” Sawyer said. “We are expecting and planning for something special at the end of the season.”
Winona State will open its 2012 season with a Thursday night game against Minnesota, Crookston in Winona. Kickoff is set for 6 pm.
