Perrot State Park programs (08/22/2012)
All events are free, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of Perrot. A vehicle sticker is required for all motorized vehicles stopping in the park.

Saturday, August 25

10:00a.m. Introduction to Orienteering

There is nothing like an old-fashioned compass for finding your way around remote areas! Come learn some simple navigation skills and basic compass use, and practice by following some short courses. No experience is necessary and all ages are invited! This is a terrific family activity.

2:00p.m. Constellation Finders

Stop by and hear a reading of Coyote Places the Stars, and then make some take-home constellation finders that you can use locate some of our common constellations.

7:30p.m. Cool of the Night Hike

The woods is a beautiful place to explore after dark. Join Andrea for a walk along Wilberís Trail leaving just before sunset and returning well after dark. The trail is fairly level and about 2 Ĺ miles long, and the pace is casual. Mosquito protection is highly recommended, and flashlights will be needed to find your way back to your campsite.

Saturday, September 1

11:00a.m. Fabulous Furs and Skulls

Come explore the world of Perrot mammals. Furs, skulls and information sheets from some our resident mammals will be available for hands-on learning.

2:00p.m.

Towering Trees

As fall beckons, our trees are prepping for the winter. Learn how to identify some of the common trees in Perrot State Park. We will learn to identify at least 3 trees by bark and how to use a simple tree key. Those young at heart will be invited to do leaf rubbing ID books to take home.

8:00p.m.-9:30p.m. Candlelight Night Hike

The Friends of Perrot will light up Black Walnut Nature Trail with tiki-torches, and you are invited to explore this beautiful self-guided trail after dark. This is the only trail in the park on which dogs are not allowed (sorry pups!). Bug protection is highly recommended.

Sunday, September 2

2:00p.m.

Marvelous Mounds

One of the magical things about Perrot State Park is our important archaeological history. Join Andrea for an introduction to the Mound Building culture, a short video, and an easy walk to nearby effigy and conical mounds.

6:30p.m. Labor Day SíMores Extravaganza!!

The name says it all! Join us for our final hurrah to summer! A wide variety of símores toppings will be available for your culinary enjoyment. This event is free, thanks to the Friends, but a donation jar will be available if you would like to help support this rather non-educational event.
