Benke, Henry Edward (09/09/2012)
Henry Edward Benke, age 94, of Winona, Minn., died on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at Lake Winona Manor.

Henry was born on November 30, 1917, in Stockton, Minn., to Edward C. and Catherine V. (English) Benke. He graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1935. Following graduation he worked for the C&NW Railroad until August of 1941, when he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. He served as an aircraft maintenance instructor and flight engineer. He served two overseas tours, China-Burma-India and the South Pacific. He was discharged in October of 1945.

Henry was employed as a service manager for Owl Motor Company, was general manager for National Can Retinning and retired from Community Memorial Hospital as the Director of Building and Grounds.

Henry married Emily M. Schmeling on July 17, 1946, in Winona.

He was a member of St. Martinís Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9, past president of the Isaac Walton League, charter member of the Winona Boat Club and a member of the original Winona Motorcycle Club.

Henry was preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother, Kenneth.

Henry is survived by his son, Bradley (Kathryn) Benke, Winona, daughter, Susan Benke, Winona, and sister-in-law, Rose Benke of Stockton, Minn.

Funeral services for Henry will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Martinís Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Richard Moore officiating. Military Rites will follow at the church conducted by the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday after 10 a.m.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to Winona Health, American Legion Post #9 or donors choice.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
