It’s time to begin thinking about the Winona County Historical Society’s Voices From the Past: Woodlawn Cemetery Walk in Woodlawn Cemetery. This year’s Walk will take place October 13 and 14 and will feature Verrazano Simpson [who publicly horsewhipped his wife]; Lena Weinberg [a woman with a “questionable” stash of money], Mayor Robert J. Tearse, Fire Chief Wise Norton, and Mayon-Elect Mat Wagner [who were part of a bitter campaign and law suits following that campaign]; Thomas Rich who was murdered by Frank Murphy; and the murder of James Malone (as noted in the historical book Murders in Minnesota). The closing of the brothels, along with prohibition to claim jumping will all be explored.
In addition,Theatre du Mississippi has produced a play, Fiends, Schemes & Broken Dreams, that will highlight similar notorious events. The drama is an original, based on old newsaper stories dealing with swindles, nefarious characters, crimes, and lost hopes from 1862-1900. It will be performed at the Masonic Theatre in Winona October 12, 13 and 14. Visit www.theatredumississippi.org for more!
Trolley rides (no extra cost) for those unable to walk the cemetery route will again be available this year, and those interested should call 507-454-2723 ext. 0 to sign-up. Event admission is $7 adults, $5 students 13 and older and $3 youth 12 and younger. Please visit www.winonahistory.org or call 507-454-2723 for more information.
