Stockpiling frac sand (09/30/2012)
From: John Kosidowski
On Monday, September 24, I was in the area of the boat landing behind the airport and observed a giant brownish cloud in the air that originated from the frac sand piles at the Kohner sandpits. That day was very windy and the airborne sand particles created quite a cloud drifting toward the west end of Bartlett’s lake and settled somewhere in that area. If that wind had been from the opposite direction it would have carried those sand particles well into that area of Minnesota City and I am sure would have created quite a volume of articles related to that sand settling on those properties. If there were any air monitor systems active in that area they would probably been clogged with the amount of sand carried into them. There have been concerns voiced about the airborne sand and this is another indication that any stockpiling of frac sand has to be done well away from any residential area.
