  (ARCHIVES)Back to Current
Marriage Amendments (09/30/2012)
From: Hans Madland

Will the Marriage Amendments pass? Maybe. Should it pass? No. Does it matter? In the short run obviously it will matter very much. On the other hand, twenty years from now it will be lumped together with things like laws against inter-racial marriage, a Constitution that kept women and African-Americans from full participation in American life, quotas that kept Jews from attending certain colleges, and the list could go on.

There are many examples of where we just got it wrong. Chances are we will get it wrong again. I am sure, though, that my children and my grandchildren will not accept this as a done deal. They will not give up until we all have equal rights.

Paraphrasing Martin Luther King, I may not live to see the change, but the change will happen. And keep your “eyes on the prize.”
