God is in charge (09/30/2012)

From T.M. Schoewe

Is God in charge? On the surface of things doesn’t it look as though Satan is the Lord of the earth? There are half a dozen major wars going on at any one time in the Middle East and through Africa. Suicide bombers throw away their own lives and take as many others as they can to the grave. A few days ago some embassies and one consulate were burned. Even one of our ambassadors along with others was murdered. Here at home drug merchants sell chemicals enslaving people, especially our young people, destroying their health and adversely affecting thousands of families. Little children are often neglected and even beaten. And the unborn are killed by abortion by the hundreds and thousands each year.

Well, that’s what it looks like on the outside. But behind these terrible scenes there is another reality. Our Lord is still in charge of every aspect of this sinful and broken world. He is in charge over world powers and over human history, which means He is in charge over current events. Human history is His-story. God doesn’t call upon evil and destruction but in His infinite wisdom permits them to happen as part of His overall plan for good. Ben Franklin said “God governs in the affairs of men...If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?” God always manages to turn the tide of history and make everything work together for the good of those who love Him. And what’s more, behind these terrible scenes are God’s holy angels, carrying out His long-range program that has a happy ending for all His believers.

Listen to His word from old Psalm 91 verses 11 and 12. It is the Psalm Satan used to tempt our Lord Christ, suggesting that He jump off of the pinnacle of the temple (so men would believe in Him). The Psalm reads “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways, they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Our Lord shot down Satan’s temptation to jump with the sharp words “It is written Thou shall not tempt the Lord your God.”

Just think about that! Nothing in your life and mine happens by accident, because you are under the constant loving eye of your God who guarantees your eternal happiness. And listen to this! He has many divisions of angels to carry out His instructions. “The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His sovereign rule is over all” (Psalm 103:19). And even as Jesus told Pilate on His way to the cross to conquer death and sin, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above” (John 19:11).

So, the conclusion is: “Do not be afraid,” your God is in charge!
