Selina “Shine” Evelyn Stratton, 90, of Winona, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, October 2, 2012, with family by her side.
Selina was born December 15, 1921, in Strum, Wis., to Salmer and Thea (Johnson) Klungseth and moved to Bemidji shortly after. As she grew up, she worked as a cook for a couple of family restaurants and also at the Beltrami County Welfare Agency mailing baby outfits and blankets to those in need. On January 23, 1941, Selina married Harold P. Clayton and had five children: Ruth, Donald, Carol, Robert, and Mae, before divorcing in 1953. On September 8, 1958, Selina was united in marriage to Eddie Stratton, and they raised two children, Edward and Bonnie. They moved to St. Charles and lived on the farm. She was a farmer’s wife, and moved to Winona in 1969 to become a day care provider and emergency foster parent for 25 years. Selina worked with Winona County Human Services and touched the lives of hundreds of children with her generosity and love. She enjoyed gardening, raising yellow canaries and listening to them sing, and sewing hand towels. Selina was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 50 years. She enjoyed attending meetings to help others learn the Bible and word of Jehovah.
Selina is survived by five children: Ruth Kerger of Warsaw, Minn., Carol Bernfeld of Kenosha, Wis., Mae Clayton of Rochester, Edward (Joella) Stratton of Winona, and Bonnie (Gerald) Kohner of Winona; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and a sister, Grace Current of Mapleton, Minn. She is preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Harold; and second husband, Eddie; two infant sons, Donald and Robert Clayton; brothers, Marvin, Gerald, and Joel Klungseth; and sister, Adeline Erlendson.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, October 5, 2012, at Hoff Funeral & Cremation Service-Hansen Goodview Chapel, with visitation two hours prior. Private family graveside services will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery. The family prefers memorials be sent to Winona Area Hospice for all the love and support they had given Selina and the family.
