Charges have been filed against a 14-year-old Winona Senior High School girl who was involved in an assault against another female student two weeks ago at Winona Senior High School.
According to Winona Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams, the teen was charged with fifth degree assault after she physically attacked a 16-year-old female student, an event that was captured on what appeared to be a cell phone video camera and then uploaded to the social networking web site Facebook.
In the video, the assailant appears to run up behind the victim, grab her hair and neck, and repeatedly punch her in the face and head. After the video was uploaded to Facebook, comments praising the assailant were posted. One user said she would have “kept going at her” while dozens more clicked the Facebook “like” button.
Williams said Evidence Technician Angie Evans spoke with the attacker after the incident. The 14-year-old alleged that the victim had spread rumors about her and had refused to admit to the allegations. Evans reported the assailant took matters into her own hands and told her, “that’s the way it works these days.”
WSHS Assistant Principal David Anderson said once the video was discovered, it was dealt with.
“We investigated the situation and followed school policy,” Anderson said. “The student was disciplined as part of our school policy that dictates what we do when we get fights at the building, which isn’t very often.”
According to school policy, the general disciplinary action is three days out-of-school suspension. Anderson did say the suspension time could be lengthened if the student is a “constant offender.” However, Anderson noted the school has not had to deal with that lately.
