Are you really listening ? (10/07/2012)
From: Dale Schauer
I applaud the action taken at the Winona County Board meeting October second by Mena Kaehler, Mr. Olson and Mr. Pomeroy. “They get it !” They did not specifically state they were pro or con regarding frac sand mining. They did, however, show their concern for the people’s concerns. They demonstrated that they not only are listening, but hear and understand the public’s feelings and perspective. This would be the first mine approved since the moratorium. Can it hurt to ensure all the I’s have been dotted and T’s crossed? Wouldn’t it be easier to reduce restrictions later than add them if it comes to that? The planning commission spent almost the same amount of time discussing a screening issue affecting a half dozen households as they did deciding on the EAW petition recommendation, which involves more people and has a longer-lasting impact. Would you rather not have every stone turned over versus someone coming back with “I told you so” following a traffic fatality OR ten years later discovering that people living along the truck route have developed silicosis from ambient air? You did it right!
