Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a brush fire in Buffalo County Monday afternoon.
A call alerted law enforcement and fire officials at about 2 p.m. Monday to the fire, located on Waumandee Creek Road about one mile south of Highway 88 in the Town of Milton. The Fountain City Fire Department extinguished the blaze and left the scene at approximately 3:30 p.m.
By 4 p.m., the Fountain City Fire Department was again called to the scene after windy conditions reignited the fire, which spread rapidly. The Arcadia Fire Department and Tri-Community Fire Department were called in to assist.
During the second response to the fire, two firefighters were “slightly injured,” according to a release from the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department. The two were taken to a local hospital for treatment due to smoke inhalation. One firefighter was reportedly treated for a minor eye injury. Both were released from the hospital.
No buildings were involved in the fire, which burned approximately 20 acres of grass and woodlands. The fire was extinguished just after midnight.
The origin of the fire is under investigation. According to the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Department, burning restrictions are in place in the county and residents and visitors must check with local fire officials before burning any material.
