Winona County Sheriff Deputy Ron Ganrude is asking area citizens to be aware of a new telemarketing scam that claimed more than $300 of a Lewiston woman’s money.
According to the report, the victim received a phone call from two males who claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House, a popular sweepstakes company. The males said the victim won an undisclosed amount of money and in order to receive it, she had to send $384.90 in shipping costs. The woman wired the money via Western Union to an address in Peru.
Several days later, the woman said the males called back asking for more money. The males said they would come to her house if she didn’t send the additional money. The woman said she felt threatened and called the sheriff’s office.
Ganrude said if any resident receives a phone call of this nature to hang up immediately and call the law enforcement center.
