Please vote “no” on the marriage amendment.
With a Minnesota marriage license comes hundreds of legal rights. Employing a legal firm to secure those same rights could cost as much as fifty thousand dollars. Under “equal protection” this already makes the amendment unconstitutional.
The Minnesota Catholic bishops are spending a great deal of money and time trying to coerce their parishioners to vote against marriage equality. This is ironic in that the stated concern is family and sexual reproduction. So does marriage exclude those beyond child bearing age, or with congenital sterility, or those suffering cancer induced infertility? Does a family not exist if one parent dies? Aren’t two parents better than none? John Paul I, himself, in prepapal writing said that gay couples make better parents. And time has proven that gay and lesbian couples make as good as parents as anyone. So the family argument is specious.
But after the way US Catholic bishops treated and are treating the victims and the families of those sexually abused by their priests, how in the world can the Bishops believe that they are in any kind of moral position to preach to anyone about anything? In another era Minnesotans rose to the occasion to secure another minority’s civil rights (slavery). Hopefully, in the same spirit, we Minnesotans will not deny another significant minority their civil rights.
So, if you are uncomfortable with this proposed injustice, vote “no” or leave it blank.
Remember these citizens are your neighbors, friends, and even close family whether you are aware of it or not.
