Hunnewell, Wendy S. (10/24/2012)

Wendy S. Hunnewell, 50, of Onalaska, Wis., and formerly of West Salem, Wis., was called home Friday, October 19, 2012, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis.

She was born July 2, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Richard and Priscilla (Hopkins) Hunnewell. Wendy was a 1980 graduate of West Salem High School. She began her teaching career after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1984. Wendy taught in the La Crosse School District for over 20 years, teaching special education at Lincoln Middle School, Longfellow Middle School, and Central High School. While teaching at Lincoln Middle School, she was honored to receive the Teacher of the Year Award. Wendy was famous for her tie-dye skills and her students always looked forward to tie-dye day at school. Wendy lived her life reaching out to help people. She will be remembered as having the biggest of all hearts and for her enormous generosity. Wendy loved fishing, photography, playing guitar, swimming, technology, collecting paperweights, and spending time with her dogs. Most especially, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and spending time on the family farm taking photos.

Survivors include her parents, Richard and Priscilla Hunnewell; her brother, Wade Hunnewell; her good friend, Janice Appell; her uncle, Gary (Bonnie) Hunnewell; her adopted daughter, Lucinda (Jeremy) Smothers; seven grandchildren; several cousins; and many friends.

Wendy was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Elden and Beulah Hunnewell and her maternal grandparents, Pleaman and Claire Hopkins.

Funeral services will be Thursday, October 25, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 2503 Main St., La Crosse, Wis. Rev. Bill Hoglund will officiate. Private family burial will be held in Prospect Hill Cemetery, La Crescent, Minnesota. Friends may call at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home, (Jostad Chapel), 121 N. Youlon St., West Salem, on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
