Thanks from Cemetery Walk (10/24/2012)
From: Kathy Turner

It was rainy and gloomy, but our spirits were high as the Winona County Historical Society held its fourteenth annual cemetery walk, “Voices from the Past: Woodlawn Discovery Walk”, October 10 - 14 in Winona’s Woodlawn Cemetery. Once again, the history of the area came “alive” as actors portrayed our ancestors and told the story of early Winona County life.

The Cemetery Walk was held on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for approximately 550 local and area students. What a personal way to learn about history! On the weekend, we moved the “Walk” in to the warm comfort of the Winona County Historical Society as the rain came down around us. Special thanks to Laurie Lucas for facilitating our move!!

This year’s theme centered around the scandals and scoundrels of early Winona and the efforts of law enforcement and the judicial system to create the law-abiding city that we know and love today.

Thank you to all of our guests who came to visit the museum on such a dreary autumn weekend. A special thanks goes to the actors who so effectively brought the characters to life. Thanks also to the volunteer guides who helped us find our way through the cemetery during the week.

Special thanks goes to Merchants Bank, our major contributor. With their support, we were able to publish the programs for the event and to pay for other expenses. We also sincerely thank Coldwell Banker Skeels/Moore and Associates for their gracious support in many areas, including keeping our actors well fed.

Thank you to Gayle Goetzman and Big Valley Ranch, Kendell Lumber, Laurie Lucas, archivist Walt Bennick, script writers Jonelle Moore, Steve Bachler, John Carrier, Kathy Schuler, Jerome Christenson, and Tim Van Cleave, Clarence Russell and the Trestor Trolley, Sarah Dixon, WSHS National Honor Society and its advisors, videographer Reverend Jim Nelson, costumer Jennifer Weaver, Jodi Brom, Joyce Betz, Bunny Bennick, Janis Vose, Judy Shepard, Midtown Foods, Hy-Vee, Jennifer Williamson, Jessica Elbert, WSU History Club, Gene Gorny and Al Paffrath, our guide at the museum. Special thanks to Nicole LaChapelle for creating our beautiful program. Thanks also to the Winona Post, Winona Daily News, Winona Radio, HBC and Charter Communications. Because of their help, the Cemetery Walk was well publicized and was well attended.

Special thanks to the Woodlawn Cemetery Association Board of Directors, Pat Kauphusman, Cemetery Superintendent, and his staff. Their enthusiastic support allows us to enjoy the beauty of the cemetery while learning about our ancestors and the hardships they withstood to help make Winona and the surrounding area the place it is today.

Heartfelt thanks to these and many others who helped with this event, including the staff of the Winona County Historical Society, Intech Printing and all of those businesses and individuals who bought advertisements in our program, all of our guides, script writers, parking attendants, and cookie bakers and sellers. Please mark your 2013 calendars for next year’s Cemetery Walk. You won’t want to miss it: October 12-13, 2013. Rumor has it that a steamboat or two may be involved!
