Lincoln freed the slaves, Teddy Roosevelt championed the environment, and Nixon gave us the Environmental Protection Agency. All Republicans. But the Republicans fought social security, called the G.I. Bill after WWII “welfare,” fought the Civil Rights Act, Medicare, Medicaid, and blocked Medicare from being able to negotiate drug prices so that we pay much more than the Canadians do for the same medicines. Now they are blocking the voting rights of the poor through the fraudulent claim of preventing voter fraud. In all honesty, though, under Eisenhower they gave us the Interstate Highway System. We would be in a great pickle today if the Republicans had filibustered a Democrat proposal. But to get back on track, Republicans are the prime DENIERS of global warming. However, the evidence cannot be denied. The Greenland ice sheet is melting rapidly, the Arctic ice sheet is disappearing each summer at the rate of 15%, the western portion of Antarctica is going at an alarming rate, our own glaciers are melting away, and the oceans are definitely warmer. Warmer ocean water means more hurricanes and more of them. Hurricanes get all of their energy from ocean water.
But, before global warning kicks in full force, there will be great disruptions of weather patterns. There is prolonged drought in the Southwest, and 95% of the whole country was in drought in August. No one can be ignorant of the massive storms that have wracked New England for the past several years. Kudzu, which has been a plague in the deep South, has spread north as far as the Mason-Dixon Line. Beetles have spread northward to Yellowstone Park, and are now destroying the white bark pine trees. Grizzlies need those nuts to fatten up for the winter. Neanderthals lived through at least three ice ages, but animals do not have that kind of adaptability. How long will it take for the African honey bees to make it to Minnesota? There are 47,000 glaciers in the Tibetan plateau. Can you imagine the devastation that will come to all those villages below the ice dams? Faced with such a horrendous legacy, I find it difficult how people can continue to vote Republican. It reminds me of something that Galileo encountered back in the seventeenth century. For over 2,000 years Aristotle was the unchallenged expert on everything physical in the world and in the heavens. He taught that heavy objects would fall from a height faster than lighter objects. Galileo did not buy it. He invited a group of highly educated people to come to Pisa for a demonstration. From the top of the Leaning Tower, he pushed off a 15 pound and a five pound iron ball from a window sill at the same time. They all saw them hit the ground simultaneously, but some of them refused to disagree with Aristotle. They could not deny the fact, but they refused to accept it.
