Marriage amendment (10/31/2012)
From: Joyce Woodworth

I was brought up in the Catholic Church and received wonderful Christian values, one of which was acceptance of all despite his or her religious beliefs, social status or sexual preference. I am no longer a practicing Catholic but I have used many of its teachings in bringing up my children.

Several weeks ago my family and I attended a Sunday Mass at the Cathedral in Winona. I was shocked and disappointed when a church member stepped behind the podium to speak and encourage the congregation to vote “yes” for the marriage amendment. What happened to Jesus Christ’s teaching to accept everyone, “to love everyone the way I have loved you?”

Because a man loves a man or a woman wants to commit for life to another woman, the Catholic Church wants to ostracize them and deny them the same legal rights their heterosexual neighbors have.

Is that what Jesus Christ supports? Oh my God, I don’t think so!

Are the women and men who choose to make a lifetime legal commitment to a person of the same sex criminals or bad people? Absolutely not! Who are we to judge another person’s happiness? Many of the congregation applauded the speaker that day, making me question the Church’s Christian values. I realize the speaker did not represent the total congregation, there are some who have heeded Christ’s teaching to love and accept one another despite their religious beliefs, social status or sexual preference.

I implore you readers to stand up for your Christian values and vote “NO” on the marriage amendment.
