Student may be charged with assault (11/04/2012)
By Emily Buss
An 11-year-old Winona Middle School boy was referred to the county attorney’s office on Friday, November 2, for charges of fifth-degree assault after he became physically violent with two classmates on school grounds on the afternoon of October 26.

According to Winona Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams, the attack stemmed from a disagreement between the boy and two alleged victims, both 10 years old, during a physical education class at the school.

Williams said the assailant found the two boys in a hallway after the class ended and proceeded to punch and shove one of the boys. After he beat on one, Williams said he turned his focus to the other victim and punched him in the face.

Winona Middle School Principal Mark Anderson declined to comment on the situation. He said he must withhold information regarding the incident and any disciplinary actions.

This is the second student assault that occurred on the property of a Winona public school within the last month.

The first occurred at Winona Senior High School on October 4, when a 14-year-old high school girl was charged with fifth-degree assault after she physically beat a 16-year-old female student in an attack that was recorded on a cell phone video camera and posted on Facebook.
