Every once in a while, I get an email with a message something like this:
“It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a controversy about having ‘In God We Trust’ on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don’t we just tell the 14% to Sit Down and BE QUIET!!!”
We should keep God in the Pledge and on our money.
I don’t agree that we should tell the 14% to sit down and be quiet.
If we tell them sit down and shut up, do you think that our self righteous, judgmental, divisive attitude would attract the 14% to our amazing God?
If the 86% who believe in God lived out our beliefs, our love of God and neighbor, in our homes, at church, at work, in our social lives and in politics, most of those who don’t know about our incredible God would come running to see what it is that makes us so fulfilled, so joyous, peaceful and forgiving.
The reason a very few blind leaders have such a powerful voice in this nation is because too many of us sit down and be quiet. We give them no clue that there is something that is much more worth while than the self-seeking, dog-eat-dog, competitive, divisive, publicly supported, materialist religion we call Capitalism.
