The Winona City Council formally declared the Third Ward seat on the City Council vacant Monday, a seat that has been empty since long-time council member Deb Salyards passed away in June.
At the request of the council, the Third Ward candidate elected to fill the vacancy will assume the position immediately after the election instead of waiting until January. Third Ward candidates are Pamela Eyden and Don Salyards, widower of Deb Salyards.
"Both candidates have said they are willing to accept appointment once we know the outcome of tomorrow's vote," said Winona City Clerk Monica Hennessy Mohan.
Salyards volunteered and served in many leadership roles in the community for 25 years, and she had operated the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast on Main Street since 1986.
