Joann Evelyn Carlson, of Becker Minn., passed away peacefully November 5, 2012, surrounded by loved ones, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.
Joann was born on the family farm in Hector, Minn., on the 4th of July to Josephine Kirchhoff and Richard Andrew Carlson in 1939. As her daughters, we grew up knowing how special she was because there were always fireworks on her birthday. From an early age, Joann’s love of animals and music was apparent; she always treated the farm animals as pets and played both piano and the clarinet.
She moved to Minneapolis, Minn., after high school to start her accounting career with the Federal Reserve. Soon after, she married Wallace Charles Carlson Jr., and with him lived throughout the United States as a Navy family, raising their three daughters: Laura, Lynn, and Lonna. Like her grandparents, she was an excellent tailor – creating beautiful clothes for her daughters, and in later years Halloween costumes for her grandchildren.ww
The family returned to Minnesota upon Naval retirement, whereupon she attended Rochester Community College and Winona State University, earning an accounting degree. After a divorce, she moved to the Twin Cities to work for Williams Publications in 1986 as the controller. Shortly after, she met her new love and life partner, Robert Swenson. Bob and Joann shared many years and happy memories visiting with family, spending weekends at their cabin fishing, and building a house together in Becker after retirement.
Those left to cherish her memory are Bob Swenson, her brother, LeRoy Carlson and sister-in-law, Joyce Carlson; daughters: Laura (Fredrik Gustafsson), Lynn (Larry Hoffstrom), and Lonna (Bob Stroinski); grandkids: Dakota Carlson, Lovisa Gustafsson, Olivia and Adam Stroinski; nephews: Allen (Beth) Carlson and Craig (Jill) Carlson; great nephews: Andrew and David Carlson; great-nieces Katie Jo, Gracie, and Rachel Carlson.
Mom – You always lived by example; you could see the good in every situation, teaching us to listen to others before considering personal interests, to be fair without judgment, and to spend time helping others.
A celebration of her life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Winona, Minn., on Friday, November 9, 2012, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor William Flesch officiating. Interment services will be held privately in Hector, Minn. Services entrusted to Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, Minn.
“In everything that happens, GOD is working for the good of those who love Him…” Romans 8:28.
Not every event is pleasant, but a lesson may be learned; a blessing received or spiritual muscles built through every experience.
