Riverway Learning Community, a tuition free Minnesota Charter School located at 1733 Service Drive in Winona, will host a Grand Opening for government, business, and educational leaders on Tuesday, November 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. This event follows closely on the heels of a family open house and is a special opportunity for community leaders to visit the school’s new facilities, get to know the staff, and familiarize themselves with the unique characteristics of the school.
Riverway was established in 2000 and continually strives to create a familial atmosphere while providing individualized education to approximately 100 students. All Riverway students learn in multi-aged settings though an integrated curriculum that strives to connect learning to life. The Montessori Method is used with students age three through grade six while a mixture of Direct Instruction and Project-Based education is used for 7th-12th graders.
To enrich the educational program, Riverway students participate in community service learning, parent involvement is expected, special education is inclusive, and the community is used as an extension of the classroom. With the Audubon Center of the North Woods as the Charter Authorizer, a key focus at Riverway has always been environmental sustainability, including an organic gardening curriculum that engages students in hands-on understanding of growing food, and an in-house food service program that provides nutritious, made-from-scratch meals, emphasizing locally grown and/or organic ingredients. Future plans include installation of a greenhouse and acquisition of land for cultivating food crops.
Government, business, and educational leaders are cordially invited to attend the Grand Opening. Our building will be open for you to explore and staff will be present to engage in conversation. Light refreshments will be served. Questions may be directed to Riverway at 507-474-6120 or riverway@hbci.com
