For 13 days, I was faked out as to the cause of the increasing pain in my left knee, thigh muscles, and hip, until a rash appeared and wife Sue said, “Lyme.” A quick glance and the physician’s assistant said “Shingles” and handed me a prescription. When Sue, waiting in the van heard “Shingles,” she said, “We’re going back in there.” The PA said she was 99.99% sure it was shingles, that she had seen a lot of shingles. Sue didn’t agree and insisted on a blood test. The next day, the PA called to say it was anaplasmosis, a disease carried by the deer tick, as is Lyme, which Sue has had twice and two of her daughters and a 2-year-old grandson have had once. The woods and outdoors used to be a friendly place.
In 81 years, I’ve never had 4 weeks of such persistent pain, burning sensation, and gnawing in my joints. It isn’t over yet and could’ve been far worse.
Do those in the medical profession receive a report card, or should they, on which their surviving patients can place a smiley face, or a big red slash?
