Get the most out of life (11/18/2012)
From: Sheila Skeels, LSW

November is Hospice Month and Winona Health Hospice is celebrating our accomplishments and remembering and honoring all those we have served. Many times people hear the term “Hospice” and they think of dying. Well I would like to give you a few other thoughts to ponder when you think of this amazing program offered right here in the Winona area.

We have more than 25 active volunteers who provide respite to caregivers, companionship to those we serve and office support to our entire program to the tune of almost 400 hours last year. Winona Health Hospice works with families in Minnesota and Wisconsin in a 35 mile radius. We provide families a weekly nursing visit, chaplain support, hospice aides to help with bathing and housekeeping, volunteers to help with care giving, and social work to help you cope with the changes in your life. We are also specializing in the unique care of Veterans and their families. Families using Winona Health Hospice can keep their family doctor whether they are at Winona Health, Gundersen or Mayo.

Many people are surprised to learn that Medicare will pay 100% of Hospice! This includes the staff who serves you, the medications that are related to your disease and all medical equipment that will add quality to your life. Hospice is about serving you! It is about your goals and your wishes in the last six months of life. It’s about getting the most out of life.

All of this is provided in your home -- whether that is an apartment, a house, assisted living or a nursing home. Everyone deserves quality care and to live life to the fullest extent possible during the last year of life. That is what Winona Health Hospice helps you to do. How can we help you to live well today? Call us at 457.4468 with any questions. We are happy to answer your questions.

Sheila Skeels is a licensed social worker with Winona Health Palliative Care and Hospice.
