Meyer, Verna Charlotte (11/18/2012)

Verna Charlotte Meyer, age 92, passed away on November 15, 2012, at Valley View Care Center, Houston, Minn., with her two daughters Candace and Pamela at her side. Verna was born January 16, 1920, to George and Meta Roda Meisner in Chatfield, Minn. She graduated from Wykoff, Minn. high school and worked for a Wykoff doctor until her marriage to Raymond W. Meyer, Wykoff, Minn., in 1941. When Ray came home from the service, the two girls, daughter #1 and daughter #2 were born. Verna worked alongside Ray in the food and beverage industry most of her life until the Williams Hotel Annex Bar and Restaurant were sold. Their first business was a Wykoff, Minn., food, ice cream, and bar café, where Verna was known to hand pack ice cream and fry chicken while Ray served drinks at the bar. Later they owned and operated the Wykoff Night Club, where couples and families would come and dance and drink “bootleg” liquor. In the early 1950s, they bought Lang’s Bar, moved to Winona, Minn., and shortly after purchased the Williams Hotel Annex Bar and Restaurant in partnership with their brother, Mickey Meyer, and Virginia Torgerson. They added a catering service that included private parties with lobster and steak dinners that were catered to Winona area island on the Mississippi River using their excursion boat, the Hiawatha Belle. They also owned and operated at that time the Whittaker Marina Drive-In, where the girls worked during the summer.

They bought a retirement home in Sun City, Arizona. Later they lived at Valley High Golf Course, close to their brother Mickey Meyer. They lived in Winona until 2001 when Ray passed away, Verna then moved to Wanamingo, Minn., to be closer to the girls. After a hip replacement, she moved to Heritage Court in Houston, Minn. Verna will be remembered for her infectious laugh, devotion to her husband and girls, her needlepoint and dish towel embroidery, love of birds and animals, always having a dog at her side.

Daughters # 1 and # 2 credit their life values and consideration and love of other people to their mom.

Verna is survived by Daughter # 1 Candace Gordon of Welch, Minn., Daughter # 2 Pamela (Jacob) Dahl of Goodhue, Minn., brother, Mickey Meyer of Houston, Minn., and sister-in-law Delores Schroeder of Spring Valley, Minn., nephews Steven (Kathy) Meyer, Winona, Joel (MaryBeth) Schroeder, Rochester, Minn., Bill (Patty) Schroeder, Stewartville, Minn., and niece Susan Schroeder, East Coast.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Winona County Humane Society or Houston County Humane Society.

A celebration of her life will be held mid-January, 2013.
