As Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) leaders prepare to trim $1.675 million from the district budget over the next three years, board members are asking the public to weigh in on the options under consideration.
An online survey has been added to the district web site, and is available until December 11 for completion by community members.
The survey includes a final section that requests comments or ideas from participants. The rest of the questions are multiple choice, and focus on whether citizens feel that class sizes could be increased, the importance of extra curricular activities, and whether people feel that the district should close a school or schools.
The survey compares the current average class sizes in various grades to average class sizes in the Big 9 Conference. In all but fifth grade, the average class sizes for WAPS fall below averages for the conference.
The survey also queries parents and other members of the public about whether the district provides adequate technology to provide students an excellent education, whether the district charges appropriate fees for activities and athletics, and whether the district allocates sufficient resources for a safe school environment.
An administrative committee is currently working to prepare a list of recommended cuts that will be presented to the school board in the coming months. Data from the survey, along with other public feedback, are expected to be used to help district leaders determine the best way to make budget cuts.
