Minnesota Marine Art
Museum Docent
On behalf of the Minnesota Marine Art Museum of Winona and my docent colleagues, I am writing to alert you to an exciting and exceptionally rewarding volunteer opportunity leading group tours at the museum. Museum docents (tour guides) lead tours designed to be inviting, interactive, and engaging. Our goal as trained volunteers is to enjoy what we do and enhance our visitors’ museum experience. Training is important and helpful to all docents, and the next “class” begins February 20.
The need for you is more crucial than ever! In mid-September of this year, visitor numbers, many arriving as part of a tour group, met and exceeded the previous year’s total numbers. Student group tour numbers alone through September were 2,230, up 300% from the previous year! We need and want you to help make meaningful connections with our visitors!
MMAM docents hail from business/industry, education, health care, the arts, environmental science, and other backgrounds. No previous knowledge of art is necessary, just a love of working with diverse groups of people and the desire to learn! The initial training and on-going monthly educational programs, along with staff and guest presentations, help to round out our tour guide skills.
I am not an artist and prior to becoming a docent and leading group tours, I didn’t know much about art. However, I admired the reputation the museum had built. With my background in education and tourism, I felt I could lend a hand. Well, I’m the one that is benefitting—my life has been forever changed and enhanced through my volunteer work at the museum. Plus, my colleagues and I have a great time planning and leading tours!
Please, consider becoming a MMAM docent. Training is scheduled for five consecutive Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. – noon or 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (block of time yet to be selected), February 20 through March 21. Contact the curator of education, Heather Casper, by telephone at 507-474-6626, ext. 17, or by email at hcasper@minnesotamarineart.org for additional information and/or to register for the training program.
Join us! You will be glad you did!
