From: Jerry Obieglo, Chairperson,
The volunteers of the 2012 Winona Area Veterans Day Planning Committee wish to say thank you to the public who came out for the Veterans Day Program at Veterans Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on November 11th. Despite the weather being uncooperative, the support shown to the Veterans of the Winona area was greatly appreciated. The committee submitted an application to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to have this year’s program considered as a Veterans Day Regional Site, and the program was granted Regional Site status. On average, there are fewer than 55 sites granted Regional Site status nationwide, so this recognition shows that the program held at Veterans Memorial Park is an outstanding event. In addition to the program, military equipment displays from the Civil War to OIF/OEF/OND were available for public viewing. Also, Boy Scout Troop No. 13 conducted a flag retirement ceremony at 1:00 p.m.
We look forward to next year’s program and the planning for 2013 will be starting after the first of the year. If you would like to get involved, please feel free to contact the Winona County Veterans Service Office or one of the veterans organizations located in Winona—American Legion Post No. 9, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter No. 5555, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1287.
At this joyous time of the year, please take a moment to remember our servicemen and -women who are defending us, and are not able to be at home with their families.
