Fountain City River Players and the city of Fountain City announce the selection of My Big, Gay Italian Wedding by Anthony Wilkinson as the 9th spring play (performance dates of this comedy are April 3-7) and Hairspray! as the 24th summer musical production (dates are July 24-28).
My Big, Gay Italian Wedding tells the comedic tale of Andrew and Anthony who want to get married and of all the family obstacles they encounter. There are roles for 14 actors, age 16 and up, and auditions will be held at the Fountain City Auditorium, 42 N. Main Street, Fountain City, Wis., on Sunday, February 17, from noon to 4 p.m. Actors should be ready to read from the script, move and work with a group. This comedy is a “hysterically funny romp down the aisle” according to one review given in 2009 when the show opened off-Broadway.
Hairspray! (The Musical) is also a comedy telling the story of Tracy Turnblad (a big girl with a big heart) who teaches us all to be proud of who we are. This rollicking musical set in the 60s brings 20 musical and dance numbers to the stage. There are over 20 memorable characters who add to the joy of the show. Hairspray! opened on Broadway in 2003 to rave reviews. “Watching this show, it’s hard to imagine anything matters but singing and dancing” wrote an early reviewer. Auditions for this show will be June 15 and 16, from noon to 4 p.m. with additional information available in late May. Hairspray! was written by Thomas Meehan and Mark O’Donnell with music by Marc Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman. The story was based on the film Hairspray! written and directed by John Waters.
Tickets will be available at the Kwik Trip and Waumandee State Bank in Fountain City and Hardt’s Music and Audio and Midtown Foods in Winona on March 10, for the spring show. Prices remain the same at $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for those 12 and under, with discount rates for groups of 15 or more. Judee Brone will direct and choreograph both shows with assistance from Jessica and Jeff Hosch, Jason Passow, Hayley Fast, Mary Aus and Janet La Duke. Production staff positions for both shows will be added and information will be out at a later date.
Fountain City River Players practices the Theatre of Inclusion giving as many actors/singers a chance to “shine on the community stage” as is possible.
