Winona police officer facing DWI charge (12/12/2012)
A veteran Winona police officer is facing a third degree driving while intoxicated charge and has been referred to the city attorney of Rochester for prosecution.

Ryan Donald Walski, 35, was off duty when he was contacted by a law enforcement official about a forfeiture paper he needed to sign, Deputy Sheriff Ron Ganrude said. Walski said he would come to city hall to sign the necessary documents and meet with Winona Deputy Police Chief Tom Williams.

Ganrude said Williams was waiting in the parking lot when Walski pulled in. Williams observed Walski exit his vehicle and walk into city hall. When Walski came out, he approached Williams’ vehicle and the two began talking.

Williams suspected Walski of drinking and brought him to Winona Health to submit a blood alcohol test. Walski’s blood alcohol content registered a .22 percent. The sheriff’s department took over the case at that point as to eliminate any conflict of interest.

Walski, a member of the department for 12 years, is on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
