Enough of the name-calling (12/12/2012)
From: Marie Kovecsi

Let’s get back to the facts. Fractivists speak from hours of personal research, reading resources from government publications to scientific research. We attend meetings to share this information along with personal experiences.

We do not speak in protection of any personal business affiliation. Nor do we hold disdain for any business. At the City Planning Commission meeting 4 spoke in support of the frac sand industry. All 4 are immediate and long-time business owners of the industry they speak to support. They stand to personally gain if minor regulations are passed. The fifth speaker in support is the President of the Chamber of Commerce.

Nine citizens stood up with comments related to our common concerns of health, safety and that elusive factor of “quality of life”. As a long-time meeting attendee I can not recall many, if any, citizens speaking in favor of minor restrictions. I do recall lawyers, public relations specialists, imported “experts” who are hired by the businesses, and individual owners expressing their support.

We have been accused of being whiners (because we often ask Commissioners to use microphones. We can’t hear the discussions at the table.) We also tend to repeat questions that have been ignored.

We have been accused of being self-appointed experts. That’s interesting. Maybe we are self- taught learners, still researching, still speaking, still working for a better Winona, not for personal gain.

The strategy to degrade the opposition as opposed to using facts is common in our politics, unfortunately. I did not think it would be a feature in our local issues. Frankly, I prefer dealing with facts from all sides.
