Stanley D. Smith, 86, of Minnesota City, Minn., and formerly of St. Charles, Minn., died peacefully Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Lake Winona Manor, surrounded by his loving family.
Stan was born September 9, 1926, in St. Charles to Donald and Bessie (Burt) Smith. On February 27, 1947, he married Gerry Emmons in Eyota, Minn. This past February they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They farmed in the St. Charles area for many years before moving to Minnesota City. Stan was employed by Garden Valley Coop for 17 years, and after retirement he worked on a part-time basis for the company during the busy season.
Stan was a member of St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church. He had many interests and passions of which his favorite was being the number one Vikings fan. He also loved hunting, fishing, gardening, wine making, cutting firewood, and tinkering in his workshop. One of the fondest memories he created for his family, especially his grandchildren, were his Sunday morning pancake breakfasts. Stan’s family will cherish the memory of all the precious moments they shared with him throughout the years and miss the endless smiles he created with his uncanny ability to make them laugh.
Stan is survived by his loving wife, Gerry; eight children: Richard (Rosella) Smith, Rushford, Minn., Dawn Shold, Lewiston, Minn., Lorie (Hassan) Vanaki, Maple Grove, Minn., Cherrie Henry, Winona; Ron (Kathe) Smith, Rollingstone, Minn., Brenda (Jim) Hoepner, Rollingstone, Minn., Leisa (Chris) Evanson, Winona; and Michelle (Patty Burfield) Smith, Houston, Minn., 20 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six sisters.
We would like to extend sincere gratitude to the staff at Adith Miller Manor for their understanding, patience and making it his home away from home for the last two years. We would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Winona Health for providing excellent care and compassion in his final days.
