LWV public education forum January 9 (12/30/2012)
From: Lori Ortega, LWV Winona Unit Program Chair

Lynn Theurer, LWV Winona Unit Steering Committee Chair

The League of Women Voters (LWV), Winona Unit, is sponsoring a public educational forum on Judicial Selection. This educational forum will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Winona City Hall located at 4th and Lafayette Streets. It will consist of a panel of speakers presenting information and allowing the public to ask questions regarding the way Minnesota selects its judges (judicial selection). LWV Minnesota is a member of the coalition that supports judicial reform. The report of the LWV Minnesota Judicial Selection Study Committee explains this position and can be found at www.lwvmn.org/judicialselection.

Panel members for the forum are: Judge Jeffrey Thompson, 3rd District Court Judge and Judicial Elections Committee of the Minnesota District Judges Association; Sarah Walker, President of the Coalition for Impartial Justice, Lobbyist at Hill Capitol Strategies, Inc. and the founder of the MN Second Chance Coalition; and Sherri L. Knuth, Public Policy Manager, League of Women Voters Minnesota.

The LWV is a non-partisan organization dedicated to providing communities with opportunities for citizen empowerment, voter information, and current issue education that helps residents stay informed about decisions that directly affect our community. The LWV firmly supports all three branches of our government to maintain our democracy. This educational forum and all LWV public forums are open to the community. Everyone is encouraged to attend. The forum is co-sponsored by the MN LWV Education Fund, AAUW, Winona County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, and Winona State University American Democracy Project.
