The Winona Senior High School (WSHS) Girls Hockey team fought hard for three periods of play against the Owatonna Huskies Thursday night at the Bud King Ice Arena, but came up short, losing 2-6.

The Winhawks came out strong against the blue and silver sweaters, but an early first period rush allowed the Huskies to slide the puck through the net past defending goalie, WSHS sophomore Jillian Hultgren, putting the Huskies on top 0-1. At 5:52, Winona senior Carly Moran answered back unassisted and tied the game 1-1.

Both teams picked up the pace in the second period. At 13:19, Owatonna junior forward Abby Sawyer shot the puck between the pipes to put the Huskies ahead 1-2. With only 19.6 seconds left in the period, Winona sophomore Molly Sanvik passed the puck to senior captain Shelby Theis for an easy goal, tying the game 2-2.

The third period quickly became a standout 17 minutes for the Owatonna Huskies when junior forward Paige Radue and freshman forward Meghan Rethemeier added two quick goals, giving the Huskies a comfortable 2-4 lead. Owatonna forward Sawyer scored the fifth goal at 10:20, adding to an already hefty lead; but, an empty net goal at 2:23 by the Huskies solidified their win: 2-6.

The now 4-7 Winona Winhawks are halfway through their three-month season. Stuck on a four-game losing streak, the girls are in search of a winning second half. The Winhawks are on the road for the next two games against Rochester John Marshall and Albert Lea, but return in action at home on Thursday, January 10, when they take on the 3-13 Austin Packers.
