Film Festival previews at St. Mane Theatre (01/09/2013)
To kick off the 2013 Frozen River Film Festival (Winona, Minn.), preview events will be held again this year in Lanesboro, Minnesota. Lanesboro Arts Center will host two films and a reception on Saturday, January 19, 2013. JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI will be shown at 3:30 p.m., and A PLACE IN THE WORLD at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Mane Theatre. A reception will follow at the Lanesboro Arts Center galleries, featuring musicians Betsy Neil (violin) and Cindy Johnson (cello). Admission to either film is $8 / $5 for LAC members, and with the purchase of a ticket for one film, the second film is free. Tickets are available in advance at Lanesboro Arts Center, 507-467-2446, or at the St. Mane Theatre 30 minutes prior to each film.

JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI is a 2011 American documentary film directed by David Gelb. The 82-minute film follows Jiro Ono, an 85-year-old sushi master who works tirelessly at his Michelin 3-Star restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro, on his continuing quest to perfect the art of sushi. JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI is a thoughtful and elegant meditation on work, family, and the art of perfection, chronicling Jiro’s life as both an unparalleled success in the culinary world and as a loving yet complicated father. “By the time this graceful film is over you understand why Japan has declared the bald, bespectacled Jiro a national treasure. Even if you’ve never tasted sushi, the man’s singleness of purpose will inspire you.” --Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, April 2012. The film trailer can be seen at http://www.magpictures.com/jirodreamsofsushi/.

In partnership with the Frozen River Film Festival, the preview films and reception are presented by Lanesboro Arts Center, located at 103 Parkway Ave N in Lanesboro, Minnesota; gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The St. Mane Theatre is located one block north of the galleries, at 206 Parkway Ave N. The 2013 Frozen River Film Festival will feature 40+ films on the campus of Winona State University January 23-27, with accompanying events including workshops, speakers, music and children’s activities held throughout Winona. www.frff.org for more information.
