In recent radio spots our Catholic Bishop invited listeners to see how the Catholic Church treats families. Most Catholics that I know treat families very well indeed. However, the same cannot be said for the hierarchy. Most people agree that committed and dedicated parents are desirable (if not always possible) for a strong family. A good marriage is the ideal. But the MN Catholic Bishops have spent a great deal of money and time trying to coerce Catholics into voting against the very marriage equality that would strengthen the family unit. Pope John Paul I, himself, when bishop of Vittorio Veneto wrote that gay couples make better parents. As the marriage equality bill is taken up by the MN legislature, take note of the MN Bishops’ response to see how they treat families. But the hierarchical (especially the Vatican) protection of priests who have sexually abused families is the quintessential example as to how the Church treats families. To this day no bishop has been punished or excommunicated by the Vatican for the sexual and emotional abuse they have perpetrated on their flock. It is true guidelines have been established but they are not mandatory and not all U.S. bishops follow them. In fact, as you read this, Bishop Finn of Kansas City, convicted of protecting a priest who was using child pornography, refuses to resign. Bishops who live in a glass church shouldn’t throw the first stone.
