Prosen, Stanley Peter (01/20/2013)

Stanley Peter Prosen, age 89, of Winona, Minnesota, died Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona, Minn.

Stanley was born April 15, 1923, in Gilbert, Minn., to Louis and Teresa (Babich) Prosen. He was very proud of his Slovenian heritage and that he was born and raised on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. Stanley graduated from Gilbert High School, and then went on to graduate from the University of Maryland with a degree in engineering. He married Wilma George Diffie, and she preceded him in death July, 1975. On December 16, 1977, he married Arlene Mae (Eklund) Garry and she preceded him in death January 26, 2012.

Stanley served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following honorary discharge, he was employed at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory in Silver Springs, MD. His next venture was making Winona, Minn., his home, working for Fiberite Inc. He then became a partner and co-founder of Aligned Fiber Composites, Chatfield, Minn. As an innovative entrepreneur, he co-founded Diversified Fabricators, Inc. and Coda Composites Company; both in Winona, Minn. Stanley’s career achievements include several patents and ASTM standards in engineering. His legacy lives on in the Composite Engineering degree program currently offered at Winona State University; a program that he was instrumental in the establishment and design of.

He was a member of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, Minn., and the Knights of Columbus, serving in the past as a Grand Knight. Stanley attained the prestigious rank of Fellow in the international SAMPE organization.

Whenever Stanley had free time, he was with friends and family: fishing, golfing, bowling, traveling, gardening, tinkering around the house, or just being with those he loved. Later in life, he enjoyed watching sports on TV and delighted in the many varieties of birds that came to eat at the backyard feeders.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children; Anne (Keith) Krage of Winona, Minn., Bruce Prosen of Winona, Minn.; William Garry of Weaver, Minn., Sandra (Garry) Beck of Hortonville, Wis., Sharon Prosen of Winona, Minn., Timothy (Pat) Prosen of Shell Knob, Mo., and Lisa (Patrick) Erdenberger of Prairie du Chien, Wis., his eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Bernice Bailey, Baytown, Tex., and brother-in-law, Dan Eklund of Tucson, Ariz.,and other extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives: Wilma and Arlene; brothers; Richard, Louis, Robert, Edward and infant William; sisters: Teresa Lindy and Jenny Carsten.

Visitation will be held Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, Minn., with vigil prayers at 3:30 p.m.. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 21, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with Msgr. Rick Colletti and Rev. Robert Stamschror con-celebrating. At the church on Monday, visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with rosary at 9:30 a.m.. Burial will take place at the Gilbert Cemetery, Gilbert, Minn., on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.

Memorials may be directed to the WSU Scholarship Fund for Composite Engineering.
