The Winona Senior High Floor Hockey team will open the 2013 campaign on Wednesday January 23 against the South Suburban Jets. The puck is slated to drop at 4:30 p.m. in the north gym of the Winona Middle School.
Winona is part of the South CI Floor Hockey division. This division is also comprised of teams from Owatonna, New Prague, Burnsville/Farmington/Lakeville, South Suburban, St Paul Highland Park, Minneapolis Edison, St Paul Humboldt, and Dakota United. The Northern division has many schools from the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities all the way up to St Cloud. Winona has had its share of tournament success including 2 state championships and several second and third place finishes.
Our roster this year includes three seniors that have been with the program since seventh grade. Goalie Brandon Comero, center Shane Spalding, and forward Courtney Scharmer will be the co-captains of our team. Shane is a goal scoring machine while Courtney is always in position around the net to slap a rebound home. Brandon is as steady as they come in the nets. We will lean heavily on their experience and leadership. Forward/center Josh Rackow is the lone junior on the team. He has one of the quickest shots on the team and will score his share of goals for the Hawks this season.
We have a mighty trio of sophomores in Bryce (Norm) Bosteter, Charlie (Chuck) McGrory, and Nick (Toolbox) Thull. These three are the ultimate team players and add a boost to our team, and the fans, any time they take the court. Our three freshman have shown a great deal of improvement since last season. Kenzie Brist is back to take on any challenge the opposition might throw her way. Dylan Kelso is set to have a breakout season on offense while Conner Larson is improving practice by practice on the defensive end.
That brings us to our two eighth grade players Haylee Collins and Jason Thomson. Haylee has shown up this year even more determined to improve upon her play from last year. She is quicker and stronger! Jason has picked up right where he left off last season as one of our best defensive players. He will be counted on to shut down any big scoring threat we run into this season.
There are many people that help make the Floor Hockey program run smoothly during the year. Chuck Schollmeier and Kara Welch do an excellent job coaching and helping our players. Former player Tyler Herber does a wonderful job running the scoreboard and former manager Matt Leisen is an all star performer as our announcer. We have great fan support during the year drawing an average of 250 fans to our home games.
As always it is an honor to be associated with this program and watch these fine student athletes compete in what I consider to be the purest form of competition. Thank you to the people at the Winona Post for printing this article! We have five home games and if you have never attended a Winona High Floor Hockey game it is worth checking out. They are exciting and a whole lot of fun.
