In an effort to bring transparency into government, the citizens of Wabasha County must explore the formation of a Political Corruption Task Force. Taxpayers can no longer trust that Chicago-style politics have not permeated our small, rural county. The need for transparency is evidenced by the actions of the new Wabasha County Board at its very first meeting of 2013.
Those of us who reside in Commissioner Springer’s district are well aware of all the hard work Sheriff Bartsh put into getting Springer elected. Bartsh chauffeured Springer door to door, business to business in his quest to get ‘his man’ on the board. Bartsh once again has the Commissioner he desires on the County Board. Remember, Springer voted to build the Sheriff’s Department an over-sized jail that is costing taxpayers millions of dollars each year.
On January 8, Springer voted to purchase two 2013 Dodge Durangos for the Sheriff for $52,000. Is it reasonable for the taxpayers of Wabasha County to question Springer’s actions? How can the people trust Springer’s vote was not a political payback for the enthusiastic campaigning efforts of the Sheriff? Why didn’t Springer abstain from voting? Do these actions constitute political corruption?
