Watch your mailbox! Winona Health and Winona County Public Health are working together on a community health assessment of Winona County residents.
Starting this week, random households in Winona County will receive a survey with questions about their health status, insurance coverage, personal health habits and healthcare experiences. Adults, age 18 and older, can participate in the survey. All data collected is anonymous and will not be linked to any individual.
“The Winona Community Health Assessment expects to survey 2,000 adults throughout Winona County on topics ranging from food choices to access to health resources,” said Betsy Midthun, vice president of Community Engagement at Winona Health. “Every survey is private and confidential. It only takes about ten to fifteen minutes to complete the survey and the information will be used to implement health and wellness programs to benefit Winona residents.”
Midthun said the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted March 23, 2010 requires not-for-profit/tax exempt/501(c)(3) hospitals to conduct a community health needs assessment at least once every three years. Local public health departments are required to conduct community health assessments every five years to meet the requirements for local public health department accreditation. Both Winona Health and Winona County Public Health will be seeking other community partners to discuss and implement the survey results.
“Regardless of the federal requirements, both Winona Health and Winona County Public Health wanted to implement a county-wide health survey of our residents to help us prioritize and target health issues within the community,” said Merrily Hazelton, Community Health Services administrator. “This was an opportune time to coordinate efforts to address top areas of concern.”
The Community Health Assessment will be completed in mid-summer with the final report scheduled by September 2013. The report will be shared with community organizations and residents. The survey is currently only available in English but it also will be presented to the Spanish and Hmong populations in the county.
