The whole problem of Second Amendment rights could be quickly solved if we would just go back to the original intent of the Founding Fathers. For them, “armed citizens” meant people armed with flintlock weapons. Having just beaten the most powerful nation on earth, they were certainly thinking of retaliation to come. Flintlocks were still the only weapons available up to the start of the Civil War. The first major development to come at that time was the pre-measured and wrapped powder charge that made the powder horn obsolete.
If the Federal Government has the authority to ban private ownership of machine guns, it certainly has the authority to ban other weapons. Precedent is an established principle of law. Rapidity of fire and the capacity for long duration of fire are the main characteristics of a machine gun.
